For me, the vibe is the most important thing—meaning I'll tell you about places that are simply amazing to be in.
1. Amed, Bali, Indonesia
A bay with an incredibly beautiful view of Mount Agung. I came here for a couple of days and ended up staying for a week. If you're tired of Bali's traffic jams and just want to relax, this town is for you. You can get out on the road in the center, look both ways, and not see a single bike. From here, it's not far to the famous gate overlooking the volcano (but it's very crowded, so maybe you shouldn't). By the way, if you walk up the road from the temple with the gate, you'll find a mountain trail leading up somewhere—I ended up there in the fog, a very atmospheric place. Also nearby is the famous photo tree with a terrace.
2. Malacca, Malaysia
The coziest town in Malaysia, near the border with Singapore, is full of contrasts. Here you can stroll through the colonial-style tourist center, with its red-brick church, a river where monitor lizards swim, Chinatown, and pleasant streets. And if you walk 20 minutes toward the island, you'll feel like a character from the movie "I Am Legend" – it's so empty that you feel like the last person on earth. Incidentally, there's a famous mosque on the island itself, but rarely do they mention the numerous abandoned buildings here. I've never seen such a huge building as the one right at the entrance. Plus, there's an entire deserted neighborhood. You can also stop by the beach with the fishermen on the way to the mosque.
3. Langkawi Island, Malaysia
The second coolest place in Malaysia. I could sail here just to do nothing. The atmosphere is relaxing and chilled, just the way I like it. If you're feeling adventurous, you can rent a bike and ride around the island to see the giant waterfall. By the way, Malaysia has the best hostels, in my opinion – your bed is separated from the others by partitions, there are even curtains, it's almost like having your own room, and it costs next to nothing.
4. Koh Phangan, Thailand
This island is famous for its full moon parties, which I didn't attend and I don't recommend you do. The thing is, the rent drops significantly between them. I stayed in a hostel with a pool 100 meters from the sea for just $1 a night. The beach here is picture-perfect – white sand, palm trees overlooking the water, and Koh Samui on the horizon. The other side of the island is also fantastic – Malibu Beach, like something out of an American teen comedy, and Koh Ma Island with a sandy isthmus leading to it, with the sea on both sides. In short, it's fantastic here – my favorite place in Thailand.
5. Vang Vieng, Laos
This is simply my favorite place! One of the most beautiful places I've ever seen. A river runs through the town, and beyond it are mountain cliffs—at sunset and sunrise, the landscape looks unreal; you absolutely have to visit it at least once in your life! And the vibe of the town itself is just right for me. You can also rent a bike here and head into the valley to explore the blue lagoons, viewpoints, and rice fields. I've been to many places in Laos, even traveled by bike, but I've never loved any other place so much.
